Dwight was the first to notice. The shop windows are full of big red hearts, pictures of red roses and balloons declaring “I love you.”
“Why do people only love each other once a year on Valentine’s Day?” she wanted to know.
Grot boy, who takes every opportunity he can to give a lesson, answered her question with another question. “What do you think love is?” he asked the teddies.
Hephie said he wasn’t sure what caused it, but he did know what it was. “You can tell when you love someone because you never, ever forget them and remember them even when they’re not there. That’s what hephalumps do” Then he leapt into my arms to give me a great big hug.
Bobby looked up from staring at his feet and suggested, “It’s when you feel all warm and gooey inside – but you haven’t eaten any chocolate.”
Ccino’s response was, “YUK! That’s for grown ups.” Then added with a toss of his little head, “It’s when I can run away and have adventures but still come home whenever I like.” Then he snuggled up close.
I was intrigued to know how grot boy would respond to the teddies’ philosophy and asked him, “So what do you think love is?”
Unusually for him, grot boy replied “I have nothing to add.”
